I’ve had this comic circling through my brain for months now, and I can’t even call it an idea — the first section of chapter 1 is fully written (in my head) and just needs to exist on the page. Been working on character designs, finessing things, trying to hone my drawing skills all the while, and that’s cool and all, necessary for sure, but also…let’s be real: we could all keep finessing for the rest of our lives and never post anything anywhere and that, well, that would suck.
I’ve been writing seriously for thirteen years now and I’m still learning, finessing, getting better, but if I’d waited until some imaginary line was crossed before I started publishing, well…I’d still be a medic probably. And saving lives was cool but ten years of that was plenty, and anyway I have stories in me that need to get out.
Comics is tricky, because any given panel can and will present you with some random shit you’ve never even thought about drawing before, and then you gotta learn and sometimes it takes forever or it just doesn’t click or look right, and then you have to either keep pushing till it does or, uh, make that character have her hands in her pockets hahaha sigh. Look I hate generative AI but I do empathize with being shit at drawing hands.
There’s learning you do in the privacy of your own sketchbook and a whole other kind of learning you have to get by doing, for real doing, and posting. In medic school, you could learn the body parts and pharmacology stats all day and night, do a hundred ride-alongs, and there’s still no comparison to the education you get working the street, making the decision, doing the job.
So, this post is to say: alright, y’all, there’s a webcomic in me trying to get out and I’m committing here in public to posting it. Soon-ish!
More details soon, but for now, for paid subscribers, here’s a time-lapse process video of the first page as it starts to come together, including a whole botched take with me using myself as a reference model in my wife’s office. Enjoy!
